Markus Altenburger is a relatively young winemaker making fun natural wines in Austria, experimenting with amphora, with skin contact and zero sulfur. This Chardonnay sits in the fun zone: it's a beautiful and pure Chardonnay from a cold climate with at the same time this little funky, reductive note.
The domain spans 15 hectares in Jois, a village in Burgenland, close to the Neusiedl lake. This Chardonnay is coming from chalk soils, or 'vom Kalk', and In the glass offers a pale golden color with a fine green sparkle. Citrus and stone fruit dominate the nose with a clear minerality from the limestone soil on which the vines are planted. Leaving this Chardonnay on its lees a little longer gives the wine a cremeux and broad character. The citrus notes and salty minerality also return. This gives it a nice texture and tension in the aftertaste.
